This exhibition is part of Hyundai Motor Company’s Hyundai Translocal Series and is the culmination of an ongoing translocal artistic collaboration between Nam June Paik Art Center and Pinacoteca de São Paulo since 2024. The participating artists and curators from both museums visited each other’s cities to explore their local cultures and histories, languages and artistic practices, and histories of migration, gaining an understanding of each region’s distinctive contexts. Through a series of preliminary forums, they further developed their research and discussions toward a shared curatorial approach.

Building on the experiences and discussions accumulated through this process, the participating artists present newly created works that reconsider translocality through the new relationships and possibilities that emerge from encounters between different regions and cultural contexts.

The Nam June Paik Art Center’s home city of Yongin is on the opposite side of the world from the location of Pinacoteca de São Paulo, and the two cities are separated by a time difference of exactly 12 hours. Thanks to today’s telecommunications technology, however, these two distant locales are able to link up with each other in real time.

Beginning in 1984, Nam June Paik staged three satellite projects to connect different cities around the world, including Paris, New York, Seoul, and Tokyo. Those projects were about more than simply overcoming physical distance through technology—they offered settings for people from different times and cultural backgrounds to meet and form new relationships and possibilities.

Drawing inspiration from Paik’s ideas, the exhibition organizes encounters between contemporary artists based in different cities to explore the potential for new relationships and connections to form where regional and cultural differences intersect. This exhibition, connecting Yongin and São Paulo, proposes an artistic practice in which experiences and perspectives from different regions encounter one another and generate new meanings.
