To mark the opening of the exhibition Circuits of Chance, the Nam June Paik Art Center will host a special concert featuring works by Milko Kelemen and Hyunsuk Jun. The concert, performed by the Hwaum Chamber Orchestra, will present Konzertante Improvisationen (1955) and Surprise (1967) by Milko Kelemen—a Croatian composer and friend of Nam June Paik—alongside Diffused Dots (2017) by Hyunsuk Jun.

Milko Kelemen was a leading figure in Croatian contemporary music and the founder of the Zagreb Music Biennale, an international festival dedicated to contemporary music. Hyunsuk Jun’s Diffused Dots was inspired by Nam June Paik’s Hommage à John Cage: Music for Tapes and Piano. This concert brings together music originating from different eras and regions on a single stage, expanding the network of artistic relations explored in Circuits of Chance.

Hwaum Chamber Orchestra

Founded in 1993 as Hwaum (畵音), an ensemble whose name signifies the meeting of “painting and sound,” the Hwaum Chamber Orchestra was expanded and reorganized in 1996. Through encounters between the distinct worlds of visual art and music, the orchestra has sought to create a new musical culture and has made significant contributions to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary music.

Since the launch of the Hwaum Project in 2002, the orchestra has commissioned works from approximately 100 composers, with Opus 240 having premiered to date. These commissioned works have been continuously reperformed both in Korea and internationally, gradually establishing themselves as the ensemble’s distinctive repertoire. In addition, through the Hwaum Criticism Award, the orchestra has expanded its network of music critics, fostering a Hwaum community in which performance, composition, and criticism converge to give concrete form to the intrinsic value of art.
