Nam June Paik Art Center screens Goodbye Mr. Orwell to mark the end of the year 2024. Originally aired by KBS as a year-end special in 1984, Goodbye Mr. Orwell is a program that looks back at the year that began with Good Morning Mr. Orwell and explores the artistic world of Nam June Paik. Professors Yoo Geun-joon of Seoul National University, Park Myung-sook of Kyung Hee University, and Lee Joon-il of Chung-Ang University are experts in art, dance, and music, and they discuss Paik's work and the art world. The exclusive terrestrial broadcast on Nam June Paik shows the general public's interest in new art or video art at the time.
The program begins with a screening of Good Morning Mr. Orwell which Paik edited down to 30 minutes, followed by interviews with members of the public involved in the art world, such as music critics and art students. This is followed by edited footage of Paik's return interview and his TV Funnel, which was exhibited at the 1984 exhibition Von hier aus – Zwei Monate neue deutsche Kunst in Düsseldorf. It recognizes Paik's status as an artist who embodied new art and influenced a generation of artists.
The use of Seoul dialect and unrefined words from the 1980s is another fun aspect of the program. Set in a German exhibition that Nam June Paik participated in, the narration refers to Joseph Beuys' work as “freaky” and mentions that contemporary artists don't care about the audience and question what beauty means to them. Considering that Goodbye Mr. Orwell was broadcast just 40 years ago, it's easy to see how our perceptions of contemporary art have changed dramatically in 40 years.
