In 1993, Paik participated as an artist in the German Pavilion at the 45th Venice Biennale. Unlike the usual practice of selecting artists from their respective countries, that year's commissioner for the German Pavilion, Klaus Bussmann, proposed the theme of East-West unification commemorating Germany's reunification in 1990. He selected Nam June Paik, an artist from the Far East, and Hans Haacke, a German artist active in the United States representing the Far West, as artists for the German Pavilion. The video records installations of the German Pavilion exhibition and performance rehearsal, followed by the award ceremony.
