Nam June Paik Art Center will give a talk in conjunction with the exhibition Nam June Paik, Super Baroque under the theme of “analog immersion.” In the exhibition Nam June Paik, Super Baroque we call the spatial and temporal experience that Paik created by projecting videos directly onto an architectural space as “analog immersion.” This might have provided a different kind of experience from today’s (perfect but flat) digital immersion generated by large-scale media facades or projection mapping realized with ultra-high resolution digital images. Analog immersion has performative characteristics that cannot be reproduced or repeated, for it is an outcome of combining various unquantifiable information. It is similar to the ideal of Baroque Gesamtkunstwerk, which sought to reveal the ruling order symbolized by light by pursuing an ultimate interaction among all art media such as architecture, painting, sculpture, music, and dance. After the talk ends, Sistine Chapel and Video Chandelier No.1 will be replaced by TV Clock and Video Chandelier No.4. The talk will be hosted by Namsee Kim, professor of Studies in Visual Arts at Ewha Womans University, Hye Jin Mun, art critic and Lee Sooyoung, curator of Nam June Paik Art Center.

Namsee Kim is Professor of Studies in Visual Arts, college of Art and Design, Ewha Womans University. Kim’s work features critique of contemporary art with a focus on relations between media and perception. He is Author of Madness, Art and Writing(2016), What is seeing(2013). He translated Walter Benjamin’s Moscow Diary(2005), Friedrich Kittler’s Gramophone, Typewriter, Film(2019) and Aby Warburg’s Images from the Region of the Pueblo Indians of North America(2021).

Hye Jin Mun is an Art critic, scholar of art theory and visual culture. Her main interests include technological media, visuality, contemporary art and visual culture. She has published a monograph, Korean art of the ’90s and postmodernism(2015), as well as Korean translations of Duty Free Art: Art in the Age of Planetary Civil War(2021), Photography: A Critical Introduction(2016) and Themes of Contemporary Art: Visual Art After 1980(2011).

Lee Sooyoung is interested in the philosophy of technology and communicating with the public through the art of Nam June Paik and has planned various exhibitions and academic programs. She curated and co-curated not only many shows such as “Us Against You”(2020), “The Pearl Diver”(2021), “Archeaology of Advantgard”(2020), and “Nam June Paik, Super Baroque”(2022), but also various international symposiums such as “Video Digital Commons”(2022).
