On August 28, 2021, Nam June Paik Art Center presents the performance Overflowing Love by the artist Seoul Express as an accompanying program of Open Codes. Networked Commons. The performance shows the process in which two objects in coding, an observer and an object, develop into a single subject beyond the existing one-sided relationship. Of course, all of these are realized with “overflowing love.”
The performance talks about ‘Object-oriented Programming.’ Object-oriented Programming means a method in which each object acquires a state and an act based on data abstraction and shapes the world through its interference and interaction. In the performance, the artist replaces the object that processes mathematical data with ‘human.’ This complex and imperfect human object constantly tries to communicate incompletely with others based on personal experiences. Even if the expected response is not returned, attempts are repeated and continuously modified. Eventually, the message arrives, and at this point, one object and the other object can recognize each other. Through this process, the world is finally unfolded. Looking at the countless short moments it takes to reach the world, the artist says that if communication succeeds, and if it is possible, then all of this will be purely thanks to overflowing love.

Seoul Express
Seoul Express (Youjin Jeon, Minki Hong) creates new media installations and interdisciplinary arts performances. They are wary of putting technology ostentatiously at the front of their work, and they avoid the art of scale. They combine formative features, sound, and movement to create a holistic image and position technology as a context that penetrates the contemporary era, not as a tool. Through non-narrative texts, abstract gestures, segmented scenes, and directing methods that don’t completely control, the audiences gain a narrative experience that they fill and complete themselves. The audience’s privatized historical experience coexists in an equal relationship with the creator’s intention, and the performance shows the possibility of heading into a new world of narrative. Seoul Express performed Code for Love (2020), a creative study that connects code and narrative, through Wooran Foundation’s Wooran Yisang Program in 2020. And they presented interdisciplinary art projects Unlanguaged Seoul (2016), Patchwork (2017), Neighbor Sound (2018), Industrial Performance (2020), and the children’s play Song and Matter (2019).
