Bacall is a mixed-media assemblage featuring the actress Lauren Bacall, who became famous after appearing in the 1994 film To Have and Have Not. A still image of Bacall wearing a hat is cut into a square and attached repeatedly in a cascade form like Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase No.2 (1912), delivering a kinetic mood. Small anthropomorphic television sets arranged in a grid—a pattern often used in Nam June Paik’s TV News—can be seen at the center, which alludes to reproduced, circulated, and stereotyped images of mass media. Behind rectangular holes, mini TV sets are inserted, which presents a juxtaposition of painting and video.
