Constellation No. 7 (1959) by Dick Higgins was presented at Festum Fluxorum Fluxus: Musik und Antimusik – Das Instrumentale Theater held at Staatliche Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf in 1963. The photograph shows, from left, Wolf Vostell, Tomas Schmit, Frank Trowbridge, Bengt af Klintberg, Arthur Køpcke, Daniel Spoerri, and Nam June Paik, with George Maciunas as the conductor. Higgins composed the Constellation series, referring to individual sound units as events, with “several events making up a constellation.” In Festum Fluxorum Fluxus, Constellation No. 7 was followed by Constellation No. 4, in which multiple performers simultaneously produced sound with any instrument available such as strings, gongs, bells, tubes, or voices; instruments that make a distinctive sound for less than a second. Constellation No. 7 was also performed later in April that year, in Al Hansen’s Happenings, Events and Advanced Musics in New York.
