On January displays “ON JANUARY THIRD, WAIT!” in upper case letters. Scrolls often appear in Nam June Paik’s works; Paik wrote instructions of Fluxus scores calligraphically on a scroll and employed existing scrolls of old painting as part of his installations. This scroll of an English sentence looks like a piece of calligraphy due to the sentence’s vertical flow, although each word is written horizontally. The last word, “WAIT!” is located far below the other words in the scroll; the composition seems to materialize the “wait.”
