Ecology is not “politics,” but a devoutful Weltanschauung, which believes in world design, global recyclisation, the shift of our attitude from “you OR me” to “you AND me,” as Mr. Fuller, the guru of the whole movement, never ceases to emphasize.
_ Nam June Paik, Global Groove and Video Common Market (1970)
NJP Reader #9 titled “Media Ecology: Revisiting TV Garden” focuses on Nam Jun Paik’s vision of media communication and the crisis of the earth’s ecosystem. It is designed to re-evaluate Paik’s ideas and share the critical investigations of the recently emerging concept Anthropocene, and the researches on its alternatives. Thereby we hope to foresee the future direction of media ecology. Paik believed that Global Groove and Video Common Market could offer more fundamental criticism of the environmental pollution than conventional documentary films on nature. Media is not simply a part of our environment but our existence. Now is the time when we should realize that ecology is not an academic metaphor, and explore how media can function as technology of life.
